Journey of Victory vs. Journey of Defeat (4)

In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent The Merciful

Journey of Victory vs. Journey of Defeat

In the previous articles, we have already established the understanding that victory and defeat are purely internal affairs. When a person is victorious inside, this victory is manifested outside, and the same goes for defeat. We have talked about the dangers of relaxation when it comes to following the deen, the elements of victory and defeat, and how to be vigilant about your actions to determine if you are on the journey of victory or defeat. In this article, we will examine the sunnah of Allah, His way of dealing with His creation, that never changes. If we comprehend the sunnah of Allah, we will understand which actions will bring us victory and which will cause defeat.

Our Lives in the Light of Sunnah of Allah

Qur’an contains the guidance for humanity until the end of time. Allah SWT has repeatedly mentioned that Qur’an has been sent down as a comprehensive book that contains instructions for everyone in all situations. Allah SWT says:

Nothing have we omitted from the Book, and they (all) shall be gathered to their Lord in the end. (6:38)

There is, in their stories, instruction for men endued with understanding. It is not a tale invented, but a confirmation of what went before it, a detailed exposition of all things, and a guide and a mercy to any such as believe. (12:111)

(Here is) a Book which We have sent down unto thee, full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that men of understanding may receive admonition. (38:29)

One day We shall raise from all Peoples a witness against them, from amongst themselves: and We shall bring thee as a witness against these (thy people): and We have sent down to thee the Book explaining all things, a Guide, a Mercy, and Glad Tidings to Muslims. (16: 89)

Since Allah SWT, by His mercy, has not left out anything from this book, He has also told us the sequence of gaining victory and closeness to Him. In this article, we will InshaAllah discuss this sunnah or sequence of Allah’s dealings with His creation.

The highest spiritual goal of any human being is to attain closeness to the Creator until one becomes His beloved. This struggle for closeness is like an unlimited ocean where the deeper one goes; the more one realizes its vastness and the pleasure of swimming in it. Any sincere person knows that it is a life long struggle and no one can reach the end of this ocean. So the question should be: How do I get closer to Allah until I become beloved to Him? How can I change my condition of internal defeat to an absolute victory between myself and Allah?

Allah SWT says:

A.L.M. Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested? We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false. (29:1—3)

He (SWT) goes on to say:

For those whose hopes are in the meeting with Allah (in the Hereafter, let them strive); for the term (appointed) by Allah is surely coming and He hears and knows (all things). And if any strive (with might and main), they do so for their own souls: for Allah is free of all needs from all creation. (29:5—6)

And those who strive in Our (cause), We will certainly guide them to our Paths: For verily Allah is with those who do right. (29:69)

Allah SWT goes on to encourage believers for persistence in the following words:

Allah has promised, to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that He will, of a surety, grant them in the land, inheritance (of power), as He granted it to those before them; that He will establish in authority their religion - the one which He has chosen for them; and that He will change (their state), after the fear in which they (lived), to one of security and peace: 'They will worship Me (alone) and not associate aught with Me. 'If any do reject Faith after this, they are rebellious and wicked. (24:55)

To establish a firm place for them in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their hosts, at their hands, the very things against which they were taking precautions. (28:6)

Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it themselves (with their own souls). But when (once) Allah willeth a people's punishment, there can be no turning it back, nor will they find, besides Him, any to protect. (13:11)

"Because Allah will never change the grace which He hath bestowed on a people until they change what is in their (own) souls: and verily Allah is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things)." (8:53)

There are among men some who serve Allah, as it were, on the verge: if good befalls them, they are, therewith, well content; but if a trial comes to them, they turn on their faces: they lose both this world and the Hereafter: that is loss for all to see! (22:11)

These ayaat are providing answers to our question. So, what is the point of mentioning them? Since Allah SWT has a sunnah, system which never changes, then if we do what other victorious people did, we will also gain victory. Vice versa, if we follow the footsteps of the defeated ones, we cannot expect anything but defeat.

The Advantages of Knowing the Sunnah of Allah:

The biggest advantage of knowing the sunnah of Allah is that it brings certainty, peace of mind, and confidence because you know what to expect under certain circumstances. For example, Allah SWT said: If ye are grateful, I will add more (favors) unto you; But if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed." Since the system of Allah never changes, if a person is being grumpy and ungrateful about what his situation is, then can he expect anything other than defeat?

If we do not comprehend the sunnah of Allah, we will be defeated. Since we will not know what is expected of us or what can happen, we will have uncertainty, doubt, lack of confidence, inability to handle a situation calmly—basically we will be manipulated by Shaytaan which brings nothing except defeat.

Imam Shafi’i was once asked: Do we gain victory first, or we get trialed first? He said, you will never gain victory until you are trialed first. So, this journey of closeness to Allah is full of trials and tribulation. It is a journey of loneliness, hardship, odds, opposition, enmity from kith and kin, desire of the change of environment, and alienation from those we love. But the study of the sunnah of Allah also tells us that this journey is one of opening after trials, and of pleasures after difficulties.

The sunnah of Allah never changes even though time, place, and situations may change. If you comprehend Qur’an, you will find your story in it. You can follow the elements of victory mentioned in the story and achieve victory. This requires one to know the elements of victory which are

  • pillars of Iman,
  • patience with Iman, and
  • patience with the sunnah of Allah.

We have the story of Ibraheem (AS) in the Qur’an which is full of advices and implementation of the elements of victory. Ibraheem (AS)’s entire life was filled with trials and tribulations which he overcame with his iman and trust in Allah; this in turn granted him love of Allah SWT until he became Khaleel-ul-lah or the intimate friend of Allah. Not only that, he was granted the honor of being the father of all messengers and prophets after him, as well as the builder (or re-builder) of the house of Allah. We will analyze the story of Ibraheem and as we do that, readers should compare his trials to their own as well as their behavior to his during the trials.

Ibraheem (AS) was the son of an esteemed idol maker; at the tender age of six or seven he was assigned the task of selling these idols in the market. He couldn’t bring himself to sell ‘god’ and refused to do so for which he was repeatedly beaten. He refused to relent and grew up with faith in his heart until he challenged the society by breaking all the small idols in a temple and blaming it on the largest idol which he left untouched. This brought him to the attention of the tyrant king Nimrud who wanted to make an example of him by punishing him publicly. He ordered for a large fire to be built which was heated for several days and Ibraheem was thrown in there. While he was ready to be thrown, Angel Jibraeel came to him and asked him if he would like him to destroy the people. Ibraheem asked if Allah had sent him; he said no, I came on my own account with the permission of Allah. Ibraheem (AS) told him that he doesn’t want his help. Then the angel of rain came and offered to save him by bringing rain onto the fire. Ibraheem (AS) asked him if Allah had sent him, and the angel of rain gave the same reply as Angel Jibraeel; Ibraheem (AS) declined his help as well. When he was thrown into the fire, Allah SWT told the fire to “be cool and peaceful upon Ibraheem.” According to some reports, Ibraheem (AS) mentioned that the best moments of his life were those that he spent in the fire.

Ibraheem grew and married a beautiful woman named Sarah. Sarah was unable to conceive and Ibraheem (AS) wanted a son who would carry on the legacy of prophet-hood and invite people to Allah. Sarah offered her slave Hajrah as a wife to Ibraheem so he could procreate and leave his legacy in earth. Allah SWT allowed Hajrah to give birth to a child called Ismaeel; at the time of Ismaeel’s birth, Ibraheem (AS) was a very old man, thus the love for his child was certainly great. When Ismaeel was still a nursing infant, Allah ordered Ibraheem (AS) to leave him and his mother at a barren valley with very little water and dates. Allah tested Hajar and upon passing her test, she was granted the well of Zamzam from Allah. Once Ismaeel grew and became a young adult, an age where a father develops natural affection and pride in his son, Ibraheem (AS) was ordered by Allah to sacrifice his son; the most difficult test any parent can go through. Ibraheem (AS) gave Allah victory by obeying his orders and was in turn given victory by Allah as his son was replaced by a ram from heaven under the sacrificial knife. Allah honored both father and son by letting them re-built the Kabah, the house of Allah, the most esteemed place on earth. And the biggest opening and victory came to him when Allah asked him to call people to Hajj. Ibraheem (AS) asked Allah how people are going to hear him and Allah responded to him saying his job is to call and it is Allah’s responsibility to get his call heard. Till the end of time, every soul that is written to perform Hajj is actually responding to the call of Ibraheem (AS).

We can see through the story of Ibraheem (AS) the succession of trials; every time Ibraheem (AS) passed the trial, he received victory; yet at the same time, the next trial was harder and the next victory was even greater than the previous one. So what is the sunnah of Allah? The higher a person climbs on the spiritual ladder, the tougher the trials become; and the more a person passes the trials being sincere to Allah, the more victorious he becomes in this world and in front of Allah SWT. Ibraheem’s legacy is celebrated every year on Eid al Adha by Muslims. Why? Because Allah wants us to remember his story and derive the messages for ourselves from his life.

The essence of the story and the messages are many but mainly Allah SWT is telling you to sacrifice whatever it takes for the pleasure of Allah; spend whatever you have for Allah; and detach yourself from everything except Allah. Basically, if you give Allah victory, He will give you victory!

We will list out the main sunnah of Allah and discuss them in the context of our contemporary lives, InshaAllah.

  1. Defeated individuals produce defeated families; defeated families create a defeated nation. This defeat causes moral values to be eradicated from a society which in turn creates more defeated individuals—this is what has happened to the Muslim world today.

This problem can be resolved because all that is required is for individuals to rise and reach spiritual victory.

  1. When individuals or nations accept this defeat and their talk and actions become those of defeated people.

If and when Allah loves a person, He allows him to realize this defeat and allows him to think about his situation. This is the first step on the ladder of victory.

  1. Once this thinking is developed, it develops awareness and the desire to change condition and achieve victory.
  2. The awakened person looks for a doctor, someone who can help him overcome his weaknesses and spiritual diseases; this doctor is a person whom Allah loves and chooses to spread His message. We have such heroes mentioned in the Qur’an, for ex. Taloot, the unknown man from Aal-Yasin, the young boy from Ashab-al-Ukhdood, believer from the palace of Fir’awn etc.

Allah wants us to come closer to this person so he can help us come out of this state of defeat and achieve high spiritual status. This person that one chooses as a doctor has to be someone who has attained internal victory between himself and Allah and has developed characteristics of a true believer. People always look for outside status whereas it is spiritual status that Allah (SWT) cares about. None of the heroes mentioned earlier held any high degrees and almost all of them were ordinary individuals but Allah had endowed them with knowledge, wisdom, and leadership.

  1. The next sunnah is the requirement to comprehend the relationship between people and this spiritual person Allah chooses over them. We will use the example of Taloot who had no money nor status and name; Bani Israel complained about his “inferiority”, but it was worldly inferiority—Allah looks for spiritual superiority and nothing else!

We need humility in order to accept the authority of people above us. Isa (AS) and Musa (AS) were also simple people and it has to be simple people so we know that Allah is the owner of all abilities and we need Him; so we can’t say that it is because of special abilities of the person that he was chosen since it will be committing shirk, or associating partners with Allah. This leader has to be chosen by people and cannot impose himself over others.

There are a few other sunnah that are included in this category and these are the set of qualities this chosen person has to have:

    1. Obedience
    2. Manner and Character
    3. Sincerity, Iman, and Trust in Allah.

The more a person is closer to Allah, the more he will have the qualities of an accepted leader.

We will use the example of Yusuf (AS) here. Yusuf (AS) was the son of a prophet and beloved to his father. From such a high status, he became a victim of envy and jealousy of his brothers and was thrown into the depths of a well. He started his journey of the unknown when he was sold into slavery and taken to Egypt. There he was raised in the house of a well-off person until he was trialed with the temptations in the form of a woman. He was able to resist the temptation and chose prison over denying the commands of Allah. He stayed in prison for years until Allah SWT not only freed him but gave him prestige and honor in land.

When we compare our lives to the life of Yusuf (AS) and compare our trials with his, who endured more? Do we have any right to complain and nag about our situations? If we complain, Allah will bring Yusuf (AS) to compare the situations of the two. If Allah can make Yusuf somebody so great, is he not able to take care of us as well? Victory ONLY comes when you show Allah that you are ONLY for Him. A true believer should not have any hesitation when it comes to sacrificing for Allah.

6. Allah expects us to completely surrender to Him with sincerity; when we reach this level, just Du’a will be enough to bring us the victory from Allah SWT.

To summarize it all, conditions are created for us only as a trial to check who we are. Allah SWT is pure and grants ultimate victories only to those who are completely pure to Him. If we try to avoid the sunnah of Allah and try to run away from fitnah, Allah will put us in a bigger fitnah because He SWT doesn’t want us to run away from situations, rather to overcome them.

How to determine if we are being trialed with a fitnah?

We have to check our hearts; if there is too much love, too much fear, too much desire for something—anything too much is a fitnah for us. Basically, anything or any situation that preoccupies us to the point we forget the owner of situation is fintah. It is against the journey of Iman and becomes a blockade between us and Allah. This brings us back to the message of Islam—that if people have real Iman, they will have the patience and wisdom to deal with the situations that are ordained for them. The benefit of knowing the sunnah of Allah is that in trying times we will not be influenced by culture, custom, or ideologies; rather we will focus on being patient with the message of Allah and His will.

How do I gain victory from trials?

Victory is tawfiq (ability) from Allah; Allah grants it to whomever He wills. Our job is to belong to Allah SWT and to show Him that we are pure and sincere to Him like Ibraheem (AS) and Yusuf (AS). We have to grant Allah’s message victory and Allah will grant us victory—if He likes. We will be tested for our efforts, not if we were granted victory or not. Of course there are elements of victory which we need to follow in order to change our situations but our focus should be on tilling the soil, not picking the fruit.

O ye who believe! If ye will aid (the cause of) Allah, He will aid you, and plant your feet firmly. (47:7)

At this point, we will InshaAllah emphasize where victory is coming from and who Allah will give it to.

Reflection over Elements of Victory and Elements of Defeat

Principals govern victory:

Below we will discuss the Principals of gaining victory. If we hold onto these principals, then we gain victory. According to our obedience to the sunnah of Allah, if we reach the accepted level, He SWT will grant us tawfiq and victory. We need to govern the following aspects of our lives with strict principals:

1. Emotions:

Emotions are against the message of Islam. Islam is based on principals and according to the sunnah of Allah, if we hold onto the principals of Islam we will gain victory from Allah. It needs knowledge and consultation; neither money nor people can bring this victory.

Lack of Iman makes us think emotionally or mentally analyze the problem. How do we combat that?

Ø Dawah to Allah.

Ø To choose and obey the people who can help you get close to Allah.

2. Decisions:

The decisions we make in our lives have to be governed by Islamic principles. The steps we take towards accomplishing anything have to be calm and should bring benefit; if they can bring harm, then it is better to delay them. This needs far sightedness and a lot of wisdom.

3. Revenge:

Prophets and Messengers never took revenge or dealt with people harshly even when they were wronged or brutalized, because elevating the message and protecting it from bad reputation is more important than setting the records straight.

4. Follow-up & Consultation:

We need baseera (internal vision) to choose the individual who has the quality to carry the message and have to not only follow them but help them carry on the message. At the beginning of your journey, when you don’t have the knowledge yet, hold onto anyone you find to be carrying the qualities.

In conclusion, we will list the ayaat of Qur’an, which emphasize our topic, for readers to examine and reflect over. It is paramount to remember that if we try to hurry the sequence of Allah, it will never work and we will fail.

Sequence of the Victory of Allah through Qur’an:

(They are) those who, if We establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs. (22: 41)

According to the ayah, the qualities of the victorious person are that they:

  • Establish Salah,
  • Give Zakah,
  • Command what is right and forbid what is wrong, and
  • Believe that ending belongs to Allah

We have to firmly believe that we have no control over the outcome and ending. When we respect Allah, we respect the ending Allah gives us. When we complain about the ending, it means we have no respect for Allah SWT.

Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who claim sanctity for themselves? Nay-but Allah Doth sanctify whom He pleaseth. But never will they fail to receive justice in the least little thing. (4: 49)

This sanctification is a gift. Allah SWT’s sunnah is that He gives people dunya and status, and then puts them in a predicament where they have to choose between this world and the hereafter—to check what the person will choose.

A person has to be pure in this journey of attaining victory and quality. This level of purity is attained when nothing bothers a person except the fear that Allah might not accept one to be the carrier of this message. The following ayaat will reiterate this point, InshaAllah.

(It is the practice of those) who preach the Messages of Allah, and fear Him, and fear none but Allah. And enough is Allah to call (men) to account. (33:39)

Those who conceal the clear (Signs) We have sent down, and the Guidance, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book,-on them shall be Allah's curse, and the curse of those entitled to curse…(2:159)

I can’t just think I am good and mind my own business. Condition of the ummah and spreading the message is your business.

And remember Allah took a covenant from the People of the Book, to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made! (3:187)

The moment we enslave ourselves to anyone other than Allah, we are on the journey of defeat.

O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the sacred house, seeking of the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the sacred precincts and of pilgrim garb, ye may hunt and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancor: fear Allah. for Allah is strict in punishment. (5:2)

Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance. (16:125)

O ye who believe! Why say ye that which ye do not? Grievously odious is it in the sight of Allah that ye say that which ye do not. (61:2-3)

The focus of our efforts should be to carry the message through our actions, to the best of our abilities.

"For ye do worship idols besides Allah, and ye invent falsehood. The things that ye worship besides Allah have no power to give you sustenance: then seek ye sustenance from Allah, serve Him, and be grateful to Him: to Him will be your return. (29:17)

Nor strain thine eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to parties of them, the splendor of the life of this world, through which We test them: but the provision of thy Lord is better and more enduring. (20:131)

But teach (thy Message) for teaching benefits the Believers. I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me. No Sustenance do I require of them, nor do I require that they should feed Me. For Allah is He Who gives (all) Sustenance,- Lord of Power,- Steadfast (for ever). (51:55—58)

Al Fudail ibn Iyaad (RA) said: Whoever fears Allah let him not be afraid of anyone; whoever fears other than Allah, there is no one that can benefit him.

A scholar said that there is no victory in life better than fear of Allah and the ability to make Salah on time.

How can we attain this Khushoo’ or internal fear of Allah?

Dhikr-ul-lah (remembrance of Allah) and Du’a (supplication); and these are the fruit of Iman and Yaqeen.

The reality of life and fear of Allah can only be attained with the internalization of death and belief that we will be presented to Allah SWT and will be accountable for our actions.

Say: "Each one (of us) is waiting: wait ye, therefore, and soon shall ye know who it is that is on the straight and even way, and who it is that has received Guidance." (20:135)

Every soul shall have a taste of death: And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception. (3:185)

Conclusion:

We need comprehensive knowledge of our deen; of ourselves and our situation; of the sunnah of Allah; of internal purification; and of who we are and where we are going. This will bring us victory and power.

One of the defeats a person can have is when Shaytaan makes one feel, “I can’t do it”, “I can’t reach my goal”, “its too hard or too far.” Despair of the victory from Allah is a sign of hypocrites and disbelievers. As we have been discussing, conditions will always be odd as seen from the lives of Prophets and Messengers. If the condition disables you and makes you defeated, don’t blame the condition, it is internal defeat of your Iman. If you believe as you ought to, Allah will change the condition. If the condition doesn’t change, meaning one hasn’t been completely purified yet. And the only way we can comprehend all of this is through knowing the sunnah of Allah.

This point can be understood by contemplating the following verse:

Nor would thy Lord be the One to destroy communities for a single wrong- doing, if its members were likely to mend. (11:117)

Who are the Muslihoon (those who mend)? These are people who do da’wah and invite others to the way of Allah SWT. A believer is very powerful and strong in his/her character and influence; this strength comes from being involved in da’wah, either active, or by setting the role model. Once the person gets away from da’wah, this strength degenerates and the person starts onto the journey of defeat. This sunnah of Allah translates to the nations as well. When the Muslim ummah was busy with the spreading of the message, Allah SWT elevated them and granted them victory; but once they got away from da’wah, the help of Allah was lifted and they were defeated.

Attaining victory from Allah is a life long struggle. It is up to Him (SWT) if He grants us the victory or not, but we have to be in a state of spiritual readiness so we can receive this victory from Him. Knowledge of the sunnah of Allah is paramount in our struggle for victory and attainment of love of Allah SWT. We pray to Allah SWT to grant us the wisdom and comprehension of His sunnah and accept us to be among the victorious ones; among those who spread His message and elevate the name of Islam.

Journey of Victory vs. Journey of Defeat (3)

We have talked about the dangers of relaxation when it comes to following the deen, as well as the elements of victory and defeat. In this article, we will try to see how we can find out if we are on the path of internal victory or defeat.

Self Monitoring: Am I on the Journey of Victory or Journey of Defeat?

Islam is the status of our lives. At any given time we are either in the state of Islam or out of Islam, based on the actions and decisions we make. If we are in state of Islam, we are on the journey of victory; and if our actions are otherwise then we are on the journey of defeat.

Allah SWT has given us the Qur’an which is the constitution of our lives. It is through the stories and events mentioned in the Qur’an that we derive messages and laws on how to govern ourselves. Qur’an is so comprehensive that a scholar said that every human being can find himself in it and know what is expected of him at any given time. Since Qur’an is the guidance till the end of time, Allah SWT has mentioned his sunan or His way of doing things, that chart out the system of the world for us. An example of that is the following ayah in surah Ibraheem:

And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you; But if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed." 14:7

So the sunnah of Allah is that anytime a person is grateful, Allah will multiply His bounties on that person, and if the person is ungrateful then he/she will receive the torture of Allah. Just like that Allah SWT has also mentioned His sunnah of granting victory. In surah Qasas, verses 5 and 6 Allah SWT says:

And We wished to be Gracious to those who were being depressed in the land, to make them leaders (in Faith) and make them heirs, To establish a firm place for them in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their hosts, at their hands, the very things against which they were taking precautions.

This is the story of Prophet Musa (AS) and Allah SWT uses the word minna which means ‘a gift for the one who doesn’t deserve it’. So what is the sunnah of Allah? That before a person or a nation receives victory from Allah it has to reach a very low point in life. Once they are deprived of all means and have no support other than of Allah, and they have absolute belief in Him—that is when they will receive victory. The message is that Allah SWT doesn’t care if we have the highest education and technology, He can take the weakest among us and make them rise above everyone else. The more someone is weak and poor, the more they will rely on Allah SWT; and it is this reliance on Him that He SWT loves.

This takes us back to the elements of victory and defeat. The more a person believes, the more He will be humble to Allah and rely on Him and His promises, which are the qualities of a true believer. The more quality a person has, the more he will be thankful to Allah which is the sign of a victorious person.

Now the argument can arise that we are in the realm of reasoning and we have to do something. If your heart is corrupted, go ahead and do what you like but Allah will not be with you; and if Allah is not with you, is there anything that you can achieve? Allah has given us stories of really weak people who He gave upper hand in earth. He shared these stories with us to check what we are going to do. What kind of decisions we are going to make and would we have live according to the elements of victory that He has given us, or elements of defeat?

The sunnah of the victory of Allah is as follows: He puts us thorough hardships, when we are all the way down He opens for us a way, after that He gives us a trial to see what we are going to do and what kind of decisions we are going to make. These decisions help us monitor our life and determine if we are on the journey of victory or the journey of defeat.

Prophet SAW told us the following story which explains this point further:

Hadrat Abu Huraira (R.A.) relates that he heard the holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) say, Allah tested three persons from amongst Bani Israel, a leper, a bald headed man and a blind person. An angel was sent down to them in the form of a human being. He came to the leper and asked, "what is the thing you like the best?", "a fine colour, neat skin and cure from this disease for which people hate me." came the reply. The angel ran his hand over his body, his disease vanished and his body got a fine colour. Then the angel asked him what property he would like the best ? The man said, "camels or cows." (the writer is doubtful). The man was given a she camel ten months pregnant and the angel said, "may Allah bless it for thee."

Then the angel went to the bald headed man and asked the same. The man replied, "beautiful hair and cure of the ailment, for which people hate me." The angel ran his hand over his head and his disease was cured leaving him with beautiful hair. Then the angel asked him what property he would like the best ? The man replied, "a cow." Thus he was given a cow carrying a calf and the angel said, "may Allah bless it for thee."

Then the angel came to the man who was blind and asked the same. He asked that Allah restore his sight so that he may see the people around him. The angel ran his hands over his eyes and his sight was restored. Then the angel asked him what property he would like the best ? The man replied, "a goat." Thus he was given a she goat carrying a kid.

These animals in due course gave birth to their kids multiplying very soon so that one had a valley full of cows, bulls and a third of the valley full of goats. After some time the angel visited the leper in his original form and said to him, "I am a poor and needy person, having spent all my means of sustenance in the course of my journey, I beg you, in the name of Allah, who has given you a decent colour and a neat skin and much wealth, to furnish me with a camel to enable me complete my journey." The man expressed his inability to oblige the angel and said, "I have many obligations to fulfill." The angel said, "It appears as if I have seen you before. Are you not a leper, who shunned people and was poor, whom Allah enriched?" The man said, "I have inherited this property from my ancestors." The angel said, "If you are speaking a lie, may Allah return you to the condition in which you were."

Then he came to the bald headed person in the original form and repeated his request to him, and got a similar reply to the one he had received from the leper. The angel said, "If you are speaking a lie, may Allah return you to the condition in which you were."

Then the angel visited the blind man repeating his request once more. The man said, "indeed I was blind and Allah restored my eye sight. You may take what you will and leave what you like. By Allah I will not refuse you anything you may wish to take in the name of Allah, the Lord of honour and glory.

The angel said, "keep all you have. All three of you were being tried. Allah is indeed pleased with you and is angry with your companions." (Sahih Bukhari:Volume 4, Book 56, Number 670)

This story is to teach us the essence of the gift, which is to be grateful to Allah SWT. Allah is Al-Qadir, Controller of all things; Allah can switch any condition and snatch His gifts, or destroy a person. He snatches His gifts from us when we don’t respect them and this is a sign of arrogance, which is an element of defeat.

Allah SWT repeatedly tells us in the Qur’an about incidents of weaker beings and nations taking over much stronger ones; to calm our hearts and to let us know that it is not our strength, wealth, expertise, or any other factor that brings victory rather it is a gift of Allah that He gives to those He wants. The story of Taloot and Jaloot mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah ayaat 247—252, is an example of that.

Their Prophet said to them: "(Allah) hath appointed Talut as king over you." They said: "How can he exercise authority over us when we are better fitted than he to exercise authority, and he is not even gifted, with wealth in abundance?" He said: "(Allah) hath Chosen him above you, and hath gifted him abundantly with knowledge and bodily prowess: Allah Granteth His authority to whom He pleaseth. Allah careth for all, and He knoweth all things."

And (further) their Prophet said to them: "A Sign of his authority is that there shall come to you the Ark of the covenant, with (an assurance) therein of security from your Lord, and the relics left by the family of Moses and the family of Aaron, carried by angels. In this is a symbol for you if ye indeed have faith." When Talut set forth with the armies, he said: (Allah) will test you at the stream: if any drinks of its water, He goes not with my army: Only those who taste not of it go with me: A mere sip out of the hand is excused." but theyall drank of it, except a few. When they crossed the river,- He and the faithful ones with him,- they said: "This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces." but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: "How oft, by Allah's will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Allah is with those who steadfastly persevere." When they advanced to meet Goliath and his forces, they prayed: "Our Lord! Pour out constancy on us and make our steps firm: Help us against those that reject faith." By Allah's will they routed them; and David slew Goliath; and Allah gave him power and wisdom and taught him whatever (else) He willed. And did not Allah Check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief: But Allah is full of bounty to all the worlds. These are the Signs of Allah. We rehearse them to thee in truth: verily Thou art one of the apostles.

Allah SWT chose Taloot to be the king because of his knowledge, wisdom, and strength; and ordered him to wage war against a mighty tyrant, Jaloot. When Taloot (AS) and his army came across a river after a long travel, Allah forbade them to drink anything more than a sip. The sunnah of Allah SWT is that He requires from believers what is usually against common sense and thinking. The purpose again is to check whether the decision is going to be according to Allah, or according to the person’s desire. Taloot’s soldiers deserted him until he had a very small army against a great one. Not only did the small army gain victory, but Allah SWT chose a young boy, Dawud (AS) to kill Jaloot to manifest the point that it is really not what we possess, but rather our spiritual status that brings us victory. It is the internal victory that is manifested outside.

Our biggest shortcoming that prevents us from gaining victory is our inability to detach ourselves from the worldly objects. In order to be victorious, we have to be pure to Allah and we will never be pure unless we learn to accept situations that are against our will. One element of victory is the belief in the Qadr of Allah; absolute belief that I will get what is written for me--nothing more and nothing less. What are trials of Allah if not to test us with things we don’t like?

How do we purify and detach ourselves from this world? Remember that no matter what your weaknesses or diseases of your heart, Allah is the owner of all treasures and He will give you whatever quality you sincerely strive for. Refer to the literature that talks about cleansing of the heart and soul; and most importantly, seek a companion and spiritual guide who will lead you down this path of purification and help you gain eternal victory. No matter how much worship one performs, if the heart is attached to dunya, happiness depends on material status, and the internal purification does not take place, there will not be any victory from Allah SWT.

There will be no victory until one goes through a series of trials and is purified. This was the sunnah of Allah with his beloved messengers, and this is going to remain His sunnah for everyone until the end of time. These trials can take any shape and form from migration, illness, torture, financial circumstances to family situation etc.

We have the example of Ayub (AS) who lost his health, wealth, family, and status—basically, Allah took all dunya from him. We also have the story of Musa (AS) who, from living as a prince in the palaces to a wandering shepherd in the desert, has to go through a series of trials in order to be purified and completely detached from worldly belongings. The main purpose of these trials besides purifying us is to sift believers from hypocrites. It is for Allah to check out who will honor His message, and who will sacrifice afterlife for this world. Detachment of world from our hearts is a journey in itself. It is through trial and error that we reach perfection; but it is not really perfection that Allah wants, rather a consistency in our choices and decisions. He wants to check what we will choose when the choices are presented to us: this world, or the hereafter? The biggest obstacle in the way of detaching ourselves from material world is our high nafs. As long as we do not submit our nafs to the will of Allah, we will never be able to achieve victory. Along with submission of nafs we need belief in the Qadr of Allah, absolute devotion, love, surrender, and fear to Him. If we are unable to do that then instead of achieving higher levels of spirituality, we will sink to the bottom pit of sicknesses such as jealousy, envy, hatred, discontentment etc.

Keeping the above discussed points in mind, a person can analyze which journey he is on: journey of victory or journey of defeat. If a person is on the journey of victory, he is willing to lose anything in order to save his Iman. His life is based on principals of Islam instead of his personal wishes and desires. He can regulate his behavior and it does not take a long time for him to overcome his weaknesses such as anger, frustration, and extreme likes and dislikes etc. If a person is on the path of defeat, he will give up his iman for any amount of worldly success. A defeated person will hold onto his weaknesses for a long time; the longer one holds onto these feelings, the longer it takes to rectify the situation. Thus, one’s decisions are influenced by his nafs and feelings instead of the message of Allah which lead him further down the path of defeat.

In conclusion, examine your actions and look at your decisions, you will know if you are on the journey of victory or defeat.

Journey of Victory vs. Journey of Defeat (2)

In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent The Merciful

Journey of Victory vs. Journey of Defeat

In the first article of this series, we have already established the understanding that victory and defeat are purely internal affairs. When a person is victorious inside, this victory is manifested outside- in multiple forms, and the same goes for defeat. The previous article explained the problems with physical, spiritual, and emotional relaxation; how this relaxation from our deen lets us drop our guard and we commit sins which cause our Iman to go down, thus we start the journey of defeat.

Elements of Victory and Elements of Defeat

Allah SWT sent us to this earth with a complete constitution. He SWT does not want us to spend our precious time on mundane things; rather He wants us to be busy with the larger affairs of this world and the hereafter. He SWT has told us the recipe of success in life. Qur’an is full of stories with direct messages for us on how to achieve this success. In this article, by the will of Allah, we will try to lay out the elements of victory and defeat from Qur’an.

Elements of Victory:

1. Iman in Allah

2. Iman in the Qadr of Allah

3. Iman in the promises of Allah

Any minus in the Iman of any of these will result in defeat from Allah. Vice versa, complete Iman in all the above mentioned aspects will result in absolute victory from Allah SWT. We will discuss the nature of this victory in detail later on InshaAllah. This point forces us to analyze our current situation as Muslims, from private to public sectors; are we in a state of victory or defeat? Do we really believe in Allah SWT, His power, His ordainment, His promises or are these just meaningless words with no substance? Do our actions contradict our professed convictions or have we become hypocrites?

Elements of Defeat:

1. Following the desire, rather than the teachings of Allah SWT.

2. Lack of obedience

3. Lack of consultation

When one looks at these elements, they seem quite harmless. But an in-depth analysis of these traits make their dreadful effects quite clear; we will inshaAllah clarify these effects for you.

Nafs, desire, is usually opposite of surrender. Our desires do not necessarily conform to the message of Islam. If one follows his/her desires rather than the advice of Allah and His prophet, then that person has been defeated because he/she chose himself above Allah SWT. The second element of defeat is lack of obedience which is a key part of Islam; obedience to Allah, His prophet, and those pious people who we need as spiritual guides. If a person doesn’t have the habit of obedience he becomes arrogant, stubborn, and emotional, and acts according to himself instead of Allah and the teachings of Quran. It means that the nafs is high, which is the ultimate defeat for a person. Majority of the family problems, the amount of complaints husbands and wives bring against each other, and the reasons spouses are fighting, is all due to high nafs and internal defeat.

Nafs is opposite of Iman and obedience is a way to conquer our nafs; lack of obedience is the reason ummah has lost unity today. We can’t handle anyone above us; let it be a leader, teacher, or a sincere advisor.

We will use the story of Ashab-al-Ukhdood, people of the trench in order to explain our topic further. It is the story of a community that believed in Allah SWT in defiance of the tyrant king who forbade them to do so. They were unknown people, during unknown time and place but they are mentioned in the Qur’an[1]. It is mentioned in Surah Al-Burooj, the Stars; it is a small surah consisting of 22 verses which was revealed in Makkah. Allah SWT did not name the chapter after Ashab-al-Ukhdood, rather it is called ‘the stars’—one of the most elevated and phenomenal creation of Allah. The surah starts with an oath which means that the news following the oath is great. But the surah does not talk about great people; rather it talks about a young, unknown boy who believed in Allah SWT and caused his entire town to believe in Allah as well. As a result, they were all killed by the tyrant king. Instead of sharing the story with us, Allah SWT told us the ending: Believers are going to jannah, disbelievers are going to hellfire. What is the message that Allah SWT wants us to get? Is the boy victorious or defeated? He died so young; he didn’t even have time to be a man. He certainly is victorious because he had all the elements of victory: absolute belief in Allah, His Qadr, and His promises; and all his efforts were focused in spreading the message of Allah. From dunya perspective, the boy and his community were all losers, since they died a brutal death; but in reality they had the ultimate victory which is to die with absolute belief in Allah SWT.

Another message we get from the story is the mercy of Allah SWT. Allah warned the torturers of the believers of a severe punishment but at the same time, He gave them a chance to repent. Allah SWT says:

Those who persecute (or draw into temptation) the Believers, men and women, and do not turn in repentance, will have the Penalty of Hell: They will have the Penalty of the Burning Fire. 85:10

This means Allah gave disbelievers a chance. Allah SWT, from His unlimited knowledge knew that these people will not believe, than what is He trying to tell me? The message is clear: Don’t be arrogant over people who are weaker than you. A sign of the victorious person is that he hates the sins and actions of people, but never hates the person. When a person starts hating people and starts looking down at them, he develops arrogance and ego. Victory brings quality in a person and the more the quality, the more humble a person becomes; basically, the sign of internal victory in a person is humbleness and humility.

If we analyze the elements of victory and those who have attained this victory, we come to a question: what is the difference between us and them? The difference is simpler than we think; they were willing to sacrifice everything for the pleasure of Allah whereas we are willing to sacrifice the pleasure of Allah for our worldly status. Why can’t we take loss in material wealth and status? We worship and have become enslaved to this material. Any time we, as humans, suffer any material failure, we get shaken and develop psychological disorders, depression and suicidal tendencies. At the same time, any material gain causes us to become greedy, boastful, and stingy. These are all signs of defeat because we are following our nafs, are not obeying Allah SWT, and have forgotten the promises of Allah.

Peace, security, and happiness are not attained through things we own; rather it is a gift from the owner of the souls. He created us to worship Him; it is through this worship and closeness to Him, that we will attain tranquility and felicity. If this were not true, then why do rich and beautiful people commit suicide? It is the internal defeat of human beings that fail them in life to the point they despair and take away their own souls. People despair because they don’t think they can attain their wishes; but a believer in the ordainment or Qadr of Allah knows that no one can take what is written for him.

Therefore, we clearly see that the victory and defeat are purely spiritual affairs. The more we strive to achieve the elements of victory inside, the more we will be victorious outside-both as individuals and as nations. But if we continue to have elements of defeat in us, we will always be hasty, egotistical, and insincere in our goals which will bring nothing except defeat to us.

In conclusion, eternal happiness or victory is attained through belief in Allah, development of character, and spreading the message of the Creator. Whereas, disbelief, following of nafs, accumulation of wealth, and focusing on worldly status rather than developing the character will bring nothing except diseases of the heart such as ignorance, arrogance, stinginess, and greed—which lead us on to the journey of eternal sadness and defeat in this life and the hereafter.

Important Message:

Since we will be using stories from the Qur’an, it is imperative that we do a quick introduction to the stories of the Qur’an. Qur’an has three types of stories:

  1. Stories of messenger and prophets:

They are the role models of humanity and were chosen and given the ultimate victory by Allah SWT. Their victory was ultimate faith in Allah, wisdom and spreading of the message.

  1. Stories of the nations:

Those nations who obey messengers and accept the message are elevated by Allah by the promises of paradise, even if they appear to be losers materialistically. The nations that deny the message get the curse of Allah, His punishment, or complete annihilation; and they are promised sever torture in hellfire, even if they have great worldly status.

  1. Stories of creature such as the young man, other men or women, ant, spider, hoopy, cow, elephant, etc.

These stories are mentioned to give us real examples of simple creatures that chose the road of belief and carried the message; and we can see in all the stories that Allah SWT elevated them as a character in this life, and with jannah in the afterlife.

[1] The significance of not having names, time, and place mentioned both in the Quran and Sunnah is to help us remain focused on the character and the message, rather than drift to technicalities. Reference: Sahih Al-Bukhari:

Journey of Victory vs. Journey of Defeat (1)

In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent The Merciful

Journey of Victory vs. Journey of Defeat

In this series, we will inshaAllah explore the concept of victory and defeat in Islam from the point of view of Qur’an and sunnah. Before we delve into this concept in detail, we have to define the terms victory and defeat. In Islam, victory and defeat are related to the spiritual status of the person rather than material or worldly conditions.

The first topic under this series is relaxation.

Relaxation: A Milestone on the Road to Defeat

Allah SWT has made this deen very vast. The fortunate ones, according to our beloved Prophet SAW are those who are endowed with the fiqh of this deen. Fiqh means critical understanding of the subtleties of the matter, or in simpler words: a deep comprehension of things that allow a person to make the right choices at the right time. Fiqh of Victory makes us realize that it is a status which is given by Allah SWT as a gift; we cannot bring victory to ourselves. Allah SWT says in the Qur’an:

Verily We established his power on earth, and We gave him the ways and the means to all ends. 18:84

This ayah talks about DhulQarnain who Allah says, He established in earth by giving him power and authority over others. He (DhulQarnain), according to Allah, did not earn it of his own merit or wealth.

This brings us to the question, who does Allah SWT grant victory? The highest level of victory and elevation is given to Messengers and Prophets as they are the best people to ever walk on this earth. This elevation was given to them not based on their wealth or social status; rather it was due to their mission which was to believe in Allah SWT and spread His message on earth.

Throughout this series, we will inshaAllah share with you stories from the Qur’an which establish the fact that victory outside will not happen unless you achieve victory within. What exactly do we mean by victory within? Absolute belief in Allah SWT. And complete belief in Allah SWT will not be manifested in the heart unless all attachment, love and devotion other than Allah’s is removed from the heart. So the real victory is when a believer dies with complete devotion to Allah, having nothing in his or her heart except Him SWT.

The biggest obstacle in this course is the minor shirk or Ash-Shirk Al-Asghar, which is having minor form of associations with Allah SWT. What exactly is Shirk? Shirk is to worship anything other than Allah. What does it mean to worship something? Whatever a person loves too much and thinks about too much, becomes a deity that one worships. This is the ultimate defeat. Unless the heart is cleansed from all such associations with Allah, a person or nation will never receive victory. This is how it works:

No submission to the Will of Allah = No surrender to Him

No surrender to Him = No Islam

No Islam = No victory

Allah SWT wants us to have absolute belief and reliance on Him in times of difficulties and trials. Why do we falter in tough situations? Because our Islam and Iman is so weak, it is like a tiny layer of sand which any wind can disperse. Our hearts are infected with diseases. Take the example of a person who gets root canal done but dentist misses a small infection. This small infection then spreads and destroys the whole tooth. The same is the case with our hearts; they are filled with diseases which eat up the Iman.

One of the stories mentioned in the Qur’an that talk about victories is of a man beloved to Allah SWT because of his character and belief. In Surah Yasin, Allah SWT mentions a man who hears about Allah’s messengers being denied by people, and he comes running from the other end of the city to give his people advice.

Then there came running, from the farthest part of the City, a man, saying, "O my people! Obey the apostles: "Obey those who ask no reward of you (for themselves), and who have themselves received Guidance. "It would not be reasonable in me if I did not serve Him Who created me, and to Whom ye shall (all) be brought back.

This advice costs him his life.

It was said: "Enter thou the Garden." He said: "Ah me! Would that my People knew (what I know)

This man lost his life because he stood up for Allah which makes him a loser. But was he really a loser? He lost his life, but what did he gain in return? The pleasure of Allah, and jannah, which is the ultimate victory. Allah SWT loved him so much that He elevated him by mentioning him in the Qur’an.

This leads us to the character traits which got him this victory. Belief in Allah, person’s courage and commitment to the truth, and his manners while delivering the message to his people. If we look at the conversation that he had with his people, we see a high level of mercy and calmness. While he was talking, he was being persecuted by people to the point he was killed; but he never shows his anger, neither does he despair instead he says, "Ah me! Would that my People knew (what I know)” What does he know? He knows that he has been granted victory by Allah. How does Allah grant him victory? By allowing him to enter Jannah, as well as avenging his death by destroying the entire city for killing him.

So far, we have established that victory can only come to a person when he/she gives victory to the message of Islam and invite others to it. How this needs to be done is what we are going to discuss now. A person gives victory to his message by showing the utmost respect for it and by being willing to sacrifice his life for it, like the man mentioned in Surah Yasin. Bad character traits, bad manners, and hastiness cause a person and his message to be defeated. First stage of invitation to Allah is to be calm and composed; even small retaliation such as raising one’s voice is not allowed as it can harm the message. We will never find any messenger who ever retaliated in the face of oppression and persecution. Da’wah can never be done with hostility because people will just focus on the wrong, and overlook the message. Meaning, one’s hastiness and bad manners will bring him defeat.

Isn’t this Muslims’ current situation? From personal life to the public, we are defeated within. Why? Because we are too relaxed with our Islam and allow our Nafs, Shaytaan, and situations to overcome our Islamic principals. A truly victorious person cares more about the message than his own self. The man mentioned in Surah Yasin, even while dying, makes du’a for his people.

If you have nothing in your heart except pure belief of Allah and you are busy spreading the message, then you have the highest level of victory, as you are on the path of Messengers and Prophets who as we stated earlier have the ultimate victory from Allah.

On the journey of Iman, trials and tests will surely occur. The question is how to remain steady and be continuously victorious? By having no attachment in your heart. A believer’s attachment is to Allah and the message.

True belief in Allah means that everything in life can be sacrificed for the message, but message cannot be sacrificed for anything. Why do people lose? Their temptations, envy, jealousy, or material love takes over which brings defeat.

The victory which a person receives from Allah SWT brings ultimate joy to the heart compared to which every other enjoyment is meaningless and fleeting. Even if a believer does not see any outward results, he/she will feel in the heart this sense of dignity, pride and pleasure which is a sign of victory from Allah. Often, this victory comes with the loss of material status, for Allah SWT to check which path a person will choose. A true believer, having no attachment in his heart other than to Allah, will not hesitate in sacrificing anything related to this world for the Akhirah. The ability to make the right choices requires a believer to be alert and conscious of his own self at any given time. Therefore, first step on this road to journey of victory is to wake up from this relaxed slumber that we have fallen into and start the real journey of Iman which will bring the victory within and without.

Death

Death-a constant reality, yet always astounding whenever we encounter it. Every day millions of people die and return to the abode of eternity, fulfilling their provision on this earth. And new souls are welcomed in this world at the same rate, if not more, to repeat the same cycle.
Death, like all orders of nature, is never delayed or averted. It is bound to visit every creation-regardless of its size, age, and well being. When looked at in the context of inevitability, it is almost humorous to see the terror it casts in humans. We avoid thinking about death as it might spoil our worldly ambitions and our competitiveness to be better than the other person. But shouldn't that be actually practiced? Shouldn't we in fact devote some time to think about death and where we will head once we leave this world? Wouldn't it help us reach a higher spiritual state? Not only would it let us be more spiritual people; when we have less materialistic ambitions in our heart it would help us to be generous, kind, merciful, softhearted, and content.
The scholars advised us with the following:
“Whoever frequently remembers death is honored with three things: quick repentance, self-contentedness and energy in doing acts of worship; and whoever forgets death is punished with three things: delaying repentance, lack of contentedness and laziness in acts of worship.”
